Benefits of Probiotics for Pets

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria and yeast, and are used to restore the normal balance of microflora (bacteria) in the gastrointestinal tract. In other words, probiotics are the “good, friendly bacteria” that are used to combat the “bad, harmful bacteria” that have grown out of proportion due to numerous reasons, such as:

  • Overuse of antibiotics or steroids destroys the normal intestinal bacterial balance
  • Dietary change or feeding poor quality commercial pet foods.
  • Exposure to pathogenic viruses or bacteria.
  • Exposure to pollutants or allergens, such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers, etc.
  • Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Stress due to changes in environment, etc.

In the last two years, studies have been conducted showing specific strains of probiotics were indeed beneficial for dogs and cats with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), gastritis and colitis (all GI conditions), as well as those suffering the side effects of antibiotics and steroid drugs.

probiotic1In fact, studies conclude that probiotics are not only effective, but also help pets recover from illness faster and with fewer complications. Supplementing a well balanced diet with a high quality pet probiotic such as, Kazooticals Probiotic Complex, helps restore a pet’s healthy gut, and it can lead to better overall health.

Pets with large amounts of beneficial bacteria are better equipped to fight the growth of unhealthy organisms. They act as the body’s first line of defence against all the potentially harmful bacteria and other microorganisms that pets eat or inhale. Thus, having a constant supply of these friendly bacteria in a pet’s GI tract can help prevent a wide range of health problems. So, if pets are to maintain a healthy body, they need large quantities of friendly bacteria.

Probiotics have been found to have a lot of benefits for pets. In particular, probiotics can help:

  • Strengthen the Immune System
  • Control Yeast and Candida
  • Alleviate Diarrhea
  • Relieve Constipation
  • Eliminate Yeasty, Infected Ears
  • Regulate Bowel Movements
  • Improve Digestion
  • Increase Energy
  • Alleviate Allergies
  • Promote Good Oral Health
  • Control Gas
  • Relieve Side Effects Associated with Antibiotic Therapy ( Diarrhea, Oral Thrush, Rash, etc )

Probiotics and Pet Food Kibble

There are many pet foods or pet products on the market that boast about probiotics in the contents. In
actuality, few products have probiotics that survive the manufacturing process, or they may survive too poorly to be effective. The labels may also be misrepresented and quality control seems to be poor in many of these veterinary preparations.

Some people would argue that dog food kibble is processed at such high temperatures that the probiotics couldn’t possibly be viable. Studies have indeed shown that probiotic bacteria cannot survive the extrusion and drying process. This is why companies making probiotic dog foods add the probiotics after the food has been cooked and dried.

Probiotics and other heat-sensitive supplements such as digestive enzymes are applied to dog foods as a powder coating after processing is complete. Although studies indicate that at least 60% of the probiotic bacteria remains viable when applied in this manner, the viability is reduced by another 25% after foods sit on store shelves, and is further reduced once the product is opened and exposed to oxygen and light. Since canned foods are cooked at very high temperatures, you will not find any canned dog foods that contain probiotics.

Viability and Amounts of Probiotics in Pet Food

Researchers at the Ontario Veterinary College evaluated the probiotic content of 19 commercial pet foods (13 dog foods and 6 cat foods) claiming to contain probiotics.

(1) Although live bacteria was present in all 19 foods, none of the probiotic dog or cat foods contained all of the organisms listed on the label. Two products listed 1 or more bacterial species as ingredients, while 12 listed fermentation products of probiotic species, 5 listed both organisms and fermentation products, and 5 products misspelled 1 of the listed species. Furthermore, 26% contained no relevant probiotic growth whatsoever.

Overall researchers concluded that commercial pet foods that contain probiotics appear to contain very low numbers of viable organisms, and although no therapeutic dose has been established for probiotic use in dogs, the amounts required for optimal effect will most likely vary from strain to strain. In addition, clinical studies demonstrating the effectiveness of probiotics for a number of applications used doses considerably higher than the amounts of probiotics found in commercial pet food.

Your dog would need to consume 5.5 kilos of the food containing the highest levels of viable probiotics a day in order to receive the dosage used in most clinical probiotic studies.

However, that does not mean, that probiotics in commercial pet food is useless. If, however, a pet is on antibiotics or has specific health problems that may respond to probiotics, it’s recommended that a quality probiotic supplement developed specifically for dogs and cats be used.
